Alii Kula Lavender Farm

September 2011

This is the fourth of six posts in the ongoing series Maui 2010.

We spent the rest of our first full day on the island exploring Upcountry Maui. On the slopes of Haleakalā, a mile above the sea, we stopped at Alii Kula Lavender Farm. The fields contained hundreds of squat lavender bushes arranged in neat, careful patterns.

At the shop we bought some lavender lemonade and lavender cookies and snacked on a wooden deck in the garden. I wondered if they had quarterly board meetings where they talked about lavender profits and lavender margins and lavender channel inventory. The thought seemed so wrong.

We climbed to the top of the farm where a solitary Buddha gazed out over the farm, down the sloping mountain all the way to central Maui and then to the sea.
