This is the first of six posts in the ongoing series Maui 2010.
It's 4:30 AM and we're standing on a volcano huddled in a small building and passing a thermos of hot coffee between us. Wind rushes up out of the crater, trying to get in. With the wind chill, it's below freezing.
This isn't exactly the right image for Hawaii. You're supposed to think of white beaches with blue waves, surfers and snorkelers, mai tais and palm trees. The summit of Haleakalā is harsh, jagged rock, and at 4:30 in the morning it is very, very cold.
The full moon was just two nights before, and now it outlines everything in a silver light. Even so, with Maui's small cities hidden underneath the clouds below, there are more stars in the sky than I remember. We pull the blankets tighter.
We're on an island, yes, but a rocky crag floating on a sea of clouds that stretches far beyond the horizon.

An elusive picture of me! Ava took that one.
